By October 31, 2021, all devices will be required to use “Modern Authentication” to access email and other Office 365 tools. The support for legacy (basic) authentication methods used by older desktop and mobile apps to access or sync your email, calendar, and other Office 365 tools will no longer work. These apps include older versions of IOS Mail (iPhone), Android mail apps, tablet apps, and Outlook 2013 and older desktop versions of Outlook.
Cyberattacks have become more common and more sophisticated. Therefore, Microsoft is phasing out the use of basic authentication. This change along with multi-factor authentication will make it harder for hackers and scammers to access an account with a stolen password.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?
Any of your apps/applications that use legacy (basic) authentication will lose access to email, calendar, and other Office 365 services (i.e. Teams, Word, Excel). If affected you will need to update your software or access the service through a browser (Edge, Chrome).
Information Technology will attempt to notify individuals that we detect will be impacted. However, because of the numerous email client configurations on personal devices, some users may not be notified. Therefore, you should check your devices.
If you are using the iOS Mail app or running iOS 11 or older on your Apple iPhone or iPad:
- Update your device to the latest version of iOS (12 or newer) or switch your mail app to Outlook for iOS.
- If you plan to continue using iOS mail, you should delete and re-add your mail and calendar account to use a more secure sign-in method.
Many Android mail apps do not support Microsoft’s modern authentication. If you are using an Android device, we recommend switching your mail app to Outlook for Android.
If you are using Outlook 2013 or an older version on your desktop, laptop, or tablet, you will need to upgrade to the latest version of Office. If you cannot upgrade to a newer version of Outlook, we recommend using the website mail.office365.com.
If you are using MacMail on an Apple computer running Mac OS 10.13 (High Sierra) or older, the device will need to be upgraded to at least version 10.14 (Mojave). If you cannot upgrade to a newer version, we recommend using the website mail.office365.com.
Do not wait until the last minute to make the appropriate changes.
